Next EDIN Workshop 22nd February 2017

EDIN members are invited to a workshop by visiting academic, Dr. Peter Balan OAM, entitled Generating Research Output from Teaching Activities.
Dr. Balan is a senior lecturer in the School of Management in the University of South Australia and a recipient of an Australia Award for Teaching Excellence.

In this interactive workshop Dr. Balan describes a process that uses student evaluation data to investigate a range of constructs that are important in education and to produce academic research output. He has been developing the approach in the field of entrepreneurship education over several years and used  the approach to develop research collaborations with educators in Canada, US, Russia and Australia working in a range of teaching areas.

11-12.30pm: The Y1Feedback Project  - Findings So Far & Implications for Practice 

The Y1Feedback Project (Supporting Transition: Enhancing Feedback in First Year Using Digital Technologies) is a collaborative project involving Maynooth University, Athlone Institute of Technology, Dublin City University, and Dundalk Institute of Technology and is funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement for Teaching and Learning. This interactive workshop will begin with a short presentation to provide an overview of the Y1Feedback project and share findings from their work so far. The presentation will be followed by a facilitated group discussion around and peer feedback on technology enabled feedback approaches, features of effective feedback for first year, and how we as academic developers can act on findings so far.  

The workshop will be facilitated by some of the Y1Feedback team including Lisa O’Regan, Project Lead Maynooth University, Morag Munro, Maynooth University, Moira Maguire, and Gerry Gallagher Dundalk Institute of Technology, and Geraldine McDermott Athlone Institute of Technology.

12.30-1.00pm: Light Lunch & Networking

1.00-2.30 pm: Professional Development Approach

This session will explore the potential for EDIN members to pilot the Professional Development approach as outlined in current documents. In particular the conversation will seek to understand each domain and phase in terms of implementation and evidence. Special focus will be given to implementation issues pertaining to the approach, and resources or supports necessary to advance same.

Dr Geraldine O'Neill from the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education will facilitate this session.

EDIN is delighted to announce a workshop facilitated by Prof Rowena Murray on Friday 29th January 2016 on Writing for Publication. This event will be of particular interest to any member of staff currently preparing a publication for a journal or book, or perhaps developing reports or other writing into research publications.

To get the most from this event, participants need to be present for the duration of the full session. Please bring your laptop, tablet or preferred media to write with on the day. Please also note that while we can provide tea/coffee, lunch will not be provided at this event. The event is free but participation is limited to 25 people.

This will be a practical workshop, involving writing activities and discussions of these activities and of our writing projects. Writing strategies we will cover include targeting journals, analysing published articles, generative writing, outlining, writing abstracts, dealing with peer review, making time to write and writing groups, micro-groups and retreats. Participants are encouraged to use laptops during the workshop – if you have one – although it is not essential to do so. All the writing activities in this workshop are intended to help participants develop their journal articles.

To get the most from this event, participants need to be present for the duration of the full session. Please note that while we can provide tea/coffee, lunch will not be provided. A range of options for lunch is available on Aungier Street, Kevin Street and Camden Street close to the venue.

Dear EDIN colleagues,

I hope all is well and the academic year is coming to a positive close for you.  As we come to the end of another successful year for the network, I would like to thank you for your inputs and engagement with EDIN throughout the year. While everyone is not actively involved all the time, I know that you follow the work of the network and the activities that take place. This year has been very busy in terms of our engagement with the National Forum, producing a special EDIN edition of the AISHE–J Journal and running two workshops (one in UCC and one in collaboration with INEW and AISHE in DIT).

Our final task of the year is to ask for a few minutes of your time to complete a survey of members to identify how EDIN can support your work as an education developer in the coming year.  It is a very short survey but it would be very beneficial in helping us to plan ahead.  Could I ask you to please fill it in and support the network to do its work?  All responses will be anonymous but it would be fantastic to get your feedback.

EDIN/HECA Collaborative Project: Identifying the Professional Development Needs of Part-Time Academic Staff

EDIN and HECA recently collaborated on a project funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning to identify the professional development needs of part-time academic staff in third level education in Ireland.

The project's aim was to deliver a research-informed analysis of professional development needs for the target group to inform continuing professional development programmes for these staff in the future.

Thank you to all of our members and their colleagues who contributed to the survey and focus group as part of this project. The research has now been completed and you can access reports on the project's website under the Publications link.

• to provide encouragement and support for action researchers in conducting rigorous and evidence based work,
• to provide opportunities for personal and critical engagement through networking and resource sharing

National Forum Research Project - Survey and Focus Groups

We are currently leading a collaborative National Forum funded research project which sets out to explore patterns of use and attitudes towards the use of open educational resources among teaching staff in higher education institutions in Ireland. This research study has received ethics approval from the Specialist REC. AISHE-J Special Issue - Call for Papers

Embedding Entrepreneurship in Higher Education Institutions

The All Ireland Society for Higher Education, AISHE, has issued a Call for Papers for its upcoming special issue Embedding Entrepreneurship in Higher Education Institutions: Reconceptualizing entrepreneurship education.

The Guest Editors of this special issue will be Professor Colette Henry (DkIT) and Professor Pauric McGowan (UU). Submission of short abstracts (400 words) to guest editors is by 17th April 2015 (collete.henry@dkit.ie, p.mcgowan@ulster.ac.uk). The publication date is expected to be February 2016. AISHE-J Special Issue on Leadership in Academic and Educational Development in Higher Education Published

An AISHE-J Special Issue undertaken by EDIN in collaboration with AISHE has now been published. The journal Special Issue took as its theme Leadership in Academic and Educational Development in Higher Education.

The special issue includes four substantive research papers, and a series of reflections and reviews of practice. All contributions were invited on this occasion, and the research includes work from Ireland as well as internationally. You can access the full text articles at the AISHE-J site here.

EDIN will shortly convene a more formal launch event to take place later this spring. In the meantime we acknowledge sincerely the work of all of the authors contributing to the special issue, and in particular our colleagues Saranne Magennis (AISHE) and Dr Alison Farrell (formerly of EDIN's Committee) for their very hard work in producing this special issue.

Upcoming EDIN Event at UCC

Museums in Education: An Alternative Approach for Educational Developers
Wednesday 21st January 2015, UCC, Cork

This event, supported by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, will give participants the opportunity to engage with a current exhibition in the Glucksman Gallery, UCC, from the perspective of teaching and learning.

We will draw on the Project MUSE (Museums in Education) approach, and Howard Gardner’s Entry Points to Learning to inform exploration and discussion. A visit to the exhibition, Selective Memory: Artists in the Archive will be included as central to this event, to prompt reflection and discussion in an unfamiliar and unique setting. The event concludes with lunch at the Glucksman Gallery.

EDIN/HECA Collaborative Project:
Identifying the Professional Development Needs of Part-Time Academics 

EDIN and HECA are undertaking a collaborative project to identify the professional development needs of part-time academic staff within Higher Education Institutions in Ireland. The project has been funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning. Its aim is to deliver a research-informed analysis of professional development needs for the target group to inform continuing professional development programmes for these staff in the future. The outcomes of the project may help to inform further work by the National Forum on professional development for academic staff across the sector in Ireland. The project is being implemented between September 2014 and May 2015. An independent Researcher, Dr Ann Coughlan, is leading the research on behalf of EDIN and HECA.

Call for papers - joint journal issue between AISHE and EDIN

EDIN will partner with AISHE to produce a joint special issue of the All Ireland Journal for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (AISHE J), for publication on 28 February, 2015.

The theme of the journal is Leadership in Educational and Academic Development.

If you would like to contribute to this journal issue please forward a 300 word abstract to Saranne Magennis, Editor, AISHE J, at sp.magennis@nuim.ie on or before Monday June 30th.  

EDIN and AISHE will jointly host a 2-day writing workshop in September for contributors to this issue.  In order to get the maximum benefit from this event all contributors should bring with them a full draft of their article.

The closing date for submission to AISHE J for this themed issue will be 1 October 2014, to allow time for the peer review process to take place.

National Forum Seminar Series - Schedule Published

New NAIRTL Publication - Threshold Concepts: From personal practice to communities of practice

A new NAIRTL publication encourages teachers in Higher Education to focus on building students’ understanding of key concepts rather than teaching an ever expanding list of topics.

Featuring international pedagogical experts in the area of Higher Education, Threshold Concepts: from personal practice to communities of practice, brings together key insights from a recent NAIRTL conference on the topic of Threshold Concepts. An online version of the publication is available to download from the NAIRTL website, http://www.nairtl.ie, and videos of the keynote presentations from the NAIRTL Threshold Concepts conference can also be accessed at http://www.nairtl.ie/conference2012.
